Essex Skypark (W48) is a small, community-oriented general aviation airport located on a peninsula in Baltimore County, Maryland, surrounded on three sides by the Back River and Middle River. Known for its scenic waterfront setting, the airport features a 2,084-foot paved runway (16/34) and a designated water runway (designated for seaplane use) on the adjacent Back River, making it a rare combination land-and-seaplane facility.
The airpark sits at just 8 feet above sea level, giving pilots striking views of the Chesapeake Bay and surrounding waterways during arrivals and departures. It is home to a close-knit group of aviation enthusiasts, many of whom keep their aircraft in hangars on site. In addition to serving recreational pilots, Essex Skypark hosts community events, fly-ins, and youth aviation programs, emphasizing its role as a hub for grassroots flying.
With its relaxed atmosphere, waterfront location, and active flying community, Essex Skypark is more than just an airport—it's a gathering place for pilots who value the charm and camaraderie of small-airfield aviation, whether flying on land or water.
